Immigrant Story
When you live far away from home as an immigrant with only the four of you, it is really hard to demonstrate all the deepness of a relationship. The school gives all the education but teaching how to love goes missing.
The love of a grandparent, how your sister should be treated and the pampering of aunts and uncles. In such circumstances the immigrant is subjected to literature that shows the values of this whole new place. And there comes the conflict within the family on literally how to live.
Despite how many times as a parent you would say what to do and how to do it, theater or movie creates a much more permanent and memorable impact which your everyday banter can never do.
As an Indian I have realized that showing my kids a bollywood movie has been really helpful in bringing the values that i want to incorporate into them. The best are the Sharukh khan movies. All the human emotions in one go. We often forget this powerful medium which taught us how to love and live too.
I used to laugh at such silly movies as a child but now what has made me realize is this art form really makes people learn how to live and love. So if you are an Indian looking for social emotional learning classes, turn to bollywood flicks. They might be a cheaper alternative to expensive SEL classes.
After all, parents are the first people to teach kids how to love. Lead with Love.
