A story called Jaisalmer

Did you know Jaisalmer was an ocean? I didn’t know either. Locals talk about the time when Rama threw an arrow and split the ocean, drying it up and making the thar desert. It is indescribable the mysteries that engulf this space. Only few you can unravel when you go there.

When you come to Jaisalmer you step on to a story never been told before.

Hearing a faint most beautiful sound of the Sarangi while the sun sets in the vast expanse of the sand dune you can’t fathom the hard life the locals live here. With the pounding sun everyday the man walks with his camel over the dunes, the harsher the weather, the warmer his heart, and whispers “khamagani” the welcome to my homeland. Somewhere from the dunes appears a troupe a little girl dressed in black from the mysterious kalbelia tribe ready to show you the most marvelous moves for just under $1 accompanied by small boys who look like her brothers. It is a different world and as the man with the camel walks away you feel like you never want to leave this world.

The next day morning you wake up again with the sounds of the sarangi. You cant be but amazed by the peacocks in the palace that dance to the sounds of the sarangi and all along you  have the most scrumptious food in this oasis in the middle of the desert.

The day awaits you to go to Jaisalmer tila or what people call Sonar kila ( If you have seen satyajit ray movie). As you go through the fort you are amazed at the only populated fort in the world. The bats line up the entry way and it is more mysterious than the by side allies of Venice. Even with the small houses the people are so warm they invite you in for a cup of chai! And as you walk it you discover the jain temple. The Parsvanath Bhagwan temple.

You take a trip to an abandoned village Kuldahara. The story of how a king fell in love with a girl from the village and to save the girl the entire village overnight abandoned their houses. The guide takes you in one of the houses and you cant but feel the goose bumps and the spookiness of the house. A neighbourhood child run towards you and sitting atop one of those palaces you cant but be amazed at the river stones that mark this desert and the fact that a 500 million year old stone is just lying next to you . The sun sets again with just you the peacock and the little boy from the village.

Jaisalmer where there is a story in every corner

The next day you visit one of the houses. You see one of the women using an age old technique of putting cow dung on the house walls to keep the house cool and painted. A chemical free and most eco friendly paint . Once in these houses you feel cool where the sun is pounding down . The water from the nearest well taste the sweetest .

And you think the story ends here when someone tells you of the place where they bury the kings. In the view you see small dotted palaces called bada bagh . To give solace from the scorching heat to the kings even in after life they build these beautiful little palaces housing the graves of these kings. Sun sets again and you cant be but awed by the story called Jaisalmer.
